DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence.

A dental implant is a small, finely engineered, titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. The implant is placed in the bone of the upper or lower jaw and allowed to bond with the bone and serve as an anchor for the replacement tooth.

Dental implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth.

Implant-supported replacement teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth.

Dental implants are a proven restorative option with a long clinical history.

Dental implants also preserve the integrity of the facial structure and reduce the inconvenience associated with tooth loss.

Your Dental Implant Process at The Ackerman Clinic

  1. Consultation: Your dentist will first perform a consultation to assess your oral health and determine if dental implants are right for you. During the consultation, your dentist will discuss your options and answer any questions you may have. You will most likely require scans/imaging that will help with planning and executing your implant treatment.
  2. Preparation: If you decide to proceed with dental implants, your dentist will need to prepare your jawbone for the implants. This may involve bone grafting or other procedures.
  3. Implant placement: Once your jawbone is prepared, your dentist will place the implants. This is a minor surgical procedure that is usually performed under local anaesthesia; however, we also provide intravenous sedation services for our more anxious patients. Kindly enquire about the same with our lovely team. You may or may not have a temporary replacement tooth/teeth depending on your case and needs.
  4. Healing: After the implants are placed, you will need to allow your jawbone to heal for several months. During this time, you will not be able to chew heavily on the side of your mouth where the implants were placed.
  5. Crown placement: Once your jawbone has healed, your dentist will assess for the stability of the implant and then place a crown on the implant or a bridge (as planned). The crowns/bridge will look and function like natural teeth.

FAQ’s

Am I a candidate for Dental Implants?

Anyone who is missing one or more of their teeth due to injury, disease or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. If one, a few or all teeth are missing, dental implants in conjunction with a crown or bridge can replace those teeth.

Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits that dental implants offer. However, health is more of a determining factor than age. If you are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you are probably healthy enough to receive dental implants.

Your clinician will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants after careful evaluation of your dental and medical history during your implant consultation.

Why should missing teeth be replaced?

Replacing missing teeth improves the appearance and function of the mouth. The gap left by a missing tooth can put a greater strain on the teeth on each side.

The bite can be affected because the teeth on each side of the missing tooth can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth meet. Food can get into the gap, creating inflammation and thereby allow gum disease to develop.

How long the does the dental implant procedure take?

Treatment time will vary depending on your individual situation. Usually, from start to finish, you are looking at a few months.

In some cases, it may be necessary to wait longer before finishing the restoration in order to obtain an optimal result.

Is there any pain or discomfort involved?

Most patients report that there is very little discomfort and that they were much more comfortable following the procedure than they anticipated. We place your implants in a very gentle fashion and expert care is taken of the various tissues involved.

Anaesthesia and patient sedation are used to eliminate any discomfort during the procedure.

Is it important to take care of the implants once my treatment is completed?

Yes! Maintaining care of the implants will help to assure the long-term success of your treatment. You will be responsible for daily plaque removal, which can be accomplished through brushing and flossing around your restoration.

Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to properly care for your implants. You should visit The Ackerman Clinic at least once a year and your hygienist 3-monthly for maintenance appointments.
